PROJECTS
KOEGAS Green Hydrogen Project
Introduction
At the core of the KOEGAS Green Hydrogen Project (“KOEGAS””) is the leveraging of abundant natural resources, solar and wind combined with available effluent water for the distillation of Green Hydrogen in the district of Marydale, Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The KOEGAS name is synonymous with one of the oldest tribal communities in the Northern Cape known as the Griekwas, who supports this project through proper established agreements, and as such the Promotors, in collaboration with the tribal community decided to name the project “KOEGAS Green Hydrogen”.
The following map provides the overall location of the project in South Africa. The project location was established through a professional evaluation process considering the access to natural renewable energy sources, access to land, water, road, and railway logistics.
- Province – Northern Cape
- Project location – Marydale (red circle)
It is critical to note that the entire project will be spread over approximately 22,500 hectares of land with concentrated areas where Solar, and Wind generation will take place.
Concept
KOEGAS aims to make use of the said proven solar and wind resources, (renewable energy – Levelized Cost of Energy generation) combined with Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) providing very competitive overall costs of energy (Levelized Cost of Energy – LCOE plus the Levelized Cost of Storage – LCOS) forecasted to reduce the cost of Green Hydrogen per kg to be at par with, or below international demand prices, confirming project competitiveness on a global scale. The Northern Cape ranks under the highest solar irradiation capacities in the world and is supported by both daytime and night-time winds with a strong and relatively consistent energy generation profile. The overall production of the Green Hydrogen will be contracted via offtake contracts to a combination of local and international markets.
In the above map, the areas are demarcated as follows:
- Solar power generation – Yellow areas
- Wind power generation – Green areas
- Water extraction – Blue areas
- Chemical plant – Orange (Koegasbrug)
Development Phases
KOEGAS will deliver its projects in multiple distinct tranches but will be improved during the development process:
Solutions – Phase 1 and 2
The KOEGAS value proposition is entrenched in harnessing cost-effective green energy and availability of water converted into the final product of Green Hydrogen. This project will be deployed over two distinct phases with the initial phase producing 37,000 MT/year of Green Hydrogen by end of 2028, increasing to 90,000 MT/year via the second phase. During the initial phase the electrolyser will consume around 350MW of continuous energy from approximately 288MW wind, 550MW solar, and carefully balanced LDES to ensure continuous energy supply and operations, as required. The KOEGAS solution is based on proven energy resources (existing renewable generation sources close to the selected sites), already secured land agreements for energy generation, right of way corridors, industrial development site, and critically, the water resources and promotors’ agreements. Further to the actual production forecasted, the logistics in transporting the final products and the impact of the hydrogen transportation solution are outlined later in this document.
Phase 1 - Gantt Chart
This phase will be to deploy the initial phase whereby end of 2029 the production of 37,000MT/annum Hydrogen feedstock to be produced.

Phase 2 Developments
This phase will be to deliver additional 90,000MT/annum Hydrogen feedstock by end of 2032.
